JURORS:
As humans, we have the ability to meet with great adversity and find a silver lining.
As artists, we have the ability to transform adversity into a source of motivation and inspiration for our work. Whether you are spending this “shutdown” reflecting, introspecting, or appreciating simple things that suddenly seem sweeter, we want to know how it is informing your art. Creativity helps us all to heal, grow and have a little fun on the way. Let’s see what you’ve got!

Kasia's Glory of the Snow
Gutting and renovating a house during Winter in New England is measured in strength and determination. Completing the work as it should be done takes an understanding and sensitivity that comes from within. When the weather finally allows work outside it may be Nature's way of saying, 'Here. See? We're here.' In the midst of all else, Kasia Klein captured this harbinger of hope. Today. And again.

HONORABLE MENTION
Nicholas Thompson
Crouching Boy
I have two young children, so living in lockdown for me has been dominated by parenting. I have found it tremendously challenging to find balance and remain emotionally centered while trying to manage kids all day every day. Once the schools closed I asked my son to pose for me for a sculpture. I hope it reflects our shared feeling of quietly waiting for things to change.

Mercy
During quarantine, I made some new paintings that reflected the edgy chaos and confusion of our current situation. I painted Mercy with a softer more luminous, metallic palette to create a reflective surface of sparkling light. Dancing by Myself
Dancing by Myself was painted while in quarantine in Rhode Island where I had gone for vacation but instead was greeted by closing businesses and shelter-in-place orders. This painting is the very first I painted when the crisis became acute.

Taken this past winter, this capture was a commentary on solitude, and how we purposefully isolate ourselves for various reasons. As I reflect on my artwork under new circumstances, I began to reexamine this piece in our current context. It has since raised questions about the positives or negatives of being alone, introspection, and the moments we take for granted.

On the Side of the Road
In an open air market in Delhi, I heard the splendid voice of a woman singing. She used her walking stick for her bearings and sight – and depended on the goodness of others for alms. Her hand was cupped at her waist. Whatever she received was no match for her voice. How very complicated it can be to calculate or compare how much is given and how much is received between people anywhere.

Callum in Hope's Army Jacket
My father-in-law, Hope Letters, enlisted with the Allied forces at the age of 17 and joined the Scottish Cameron Highlanders. His unit helped sweep the Nazis out of Italy from south to north, village to village, on foot. He suffered a stroke on May 10th at the age of 95, and because of COVID-19, we couldn't be by his side in Scotland when he died a week later. He deserved better. Unfortunately, one of many.

Help
Help explores the concepts of separation, protection and identity as it relates to Covid-19. Help is an electronic sculpture, which consists of a futuristic humanoid head that is illuminated by an interactive metallic brain. The sculpture glows from a multicolored light source that reacts to sonic energy. Help is isolated behind acrylic barriers and is fitted with a stainless steel face-mask.
